Herrenknecht’s E-Power Pipe Nominated for Major International Award
MUNICH (UC) – Herrenknecht was nominated for the bauma Innovation Award 2019 in the “Machine” category. The company’s E-Power Pipe technology is a trenchless method for the economic and environmentally friendly installation of underground cables.
With this technology, small diameter cable protection pipes can be installed quickly and securely underground at distances well more than half a mile and in the future, the technology hopes to be able to install cables trenchlessly at a depth of between six and12 feet with minimal invasion of the landscape.
The system is comprised of a fully remoted tunnel boring machine which can install several lines in parallel, as well as a jet pump for transporting the muck. The jet pump with integrated hydraulic power unit enables up to 10 times tunneling distances at high speeds.
Multiple pilot projects have successfully demonstrated the technology by achieving daily best performances of 600 feet during tunneling and 870 feet when the protective pipe was pulled in.
The E-Power Pipe system promises minimal environmental impact as it significantly reduces the amount of earth needed to be moved, up to 90 percent. The surface and soil structure is largely untouched over long distances and the amount of trucks and machines needed is greatly reduced. The required personnel and associated costs are also significantly lower compared to open-cut installation. These time and cost savings can significantly increase efficiency.
The award winner will be announced at the annual bauma conference in Munich April 8-14.
