$231 million infrastructure project replaces water mains, sewers in Manhattan, NYC
(UI) — City officials and council members met in midtown on Tuesday to commemorate changes to Manhattan's water distribution system and roadway improvements along Ninth Avenue, News 12 The Bronx reported.
The $231 million infrastructure project includes 14 miles of new water mains and sewers in addition to a complete street makeover that frees up more space for walkers and bikes.
“To address this, DOT removed a southbound travel lane and created what we are calling super sidewalks,” Ydanis Rodriguez, New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner, told News 12.
The Department of Environmental Protection and Department of Design and Construction rebuilt 650,000 sq. ft of roadway along with curbs and sidewalks as part of the project, in addition to installing 18,000 feet of water mains and replacing over 5,000 feet of sewers.
“When we build water infrastructure in New York City, we think about it as having a 100+ year life. So this is something our grandchild will be relying on and our great-grandchild,” Rohit T. Aggarwal, Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner, told News 12.
“We are not done in this community. This year we continue our work on Ninth Avenue with similar upgrades between 30th Street and 34th Street. …so this is going to be the future of our city,” Rodriguez added.
