McCarthy tackles underground obstacles to deliver innovative structures for Houston hospital
(UI) — In the greater Houston area, on the grounds of Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. has finished building two facilities, Healthcare Facilities Today reported. A seven-level parking garage was adjacent to the project's six-story medical office structure.
McCarthy took on a significant logistical task as part of the project to extend a water main 2,500 feet across the property while managing existing underground utilities. McCarthy employed a completely BIM-coordinated MEP system on the technical front and used McCarthy Mapping to locate underground utilities.
Additionally, the project's placement on campus presented other difficulties because McCarthy had to complete this job in a small space without interfering with crucial hospital activities. Deliveries were scheduled so that items could be put in place as quickly as possible to make room for the restricted laydown area. Supply chain issues were controlled to make sure materials arrived on time and didn't interfere with the project's timeline.
A medical office building comprising 160,000 square feet was part of McCarthy's design, and the garage has 1,100 spots. Conditioned pedestrian bridges link the brand-new medical office building to the campus's older structures.
The new garage is linked to a preexisting garage nearby by a car bridge. McCarthy was in charge of developing the foyer, hallways, and an endoscopic surgery center for the building's interior. Three endoscopic rooms and one operating room are part of the surgical facility, which will be finished in August.
The old garage structure was also strengthened to make room for the new car connecting bridge.
McCarthy initially broke ground on the project in December 2021.
With Page serving as the project's architect and Jacobs acting as the Owner's agent, McCarthy managed the project's construction.
