Excavation workers hit gas line in La Pine, Ore., subdivision
(UI) — In La Pine, Oregon, an excavation crew working in a newly developed subdivision had an incident where they accidentally hit a two-inch natural gas line, KTVZ reported on Oct. 3.
According to KTVZ, this led to a gas leak that raised concerns among nearby residents, resulting in advisories to shelter in place and avoid outdoor open flames until the repairs were completed, which took approximately an hour.
Lieutenant Joey Sawyer of the La Pine Rural Fire District responded to the situation after receiving reports of a gas leak at a construction site on Musket Drive, west of Highway 97, within the Crescent Creek subdivision. The impact was significant, with the sound of escaping gas audible from a distance of 50 to 75 feet, and dirt flying in the vicinity, KTVZ reported.
To ensure the safety of the community, approximately 120 individuals residing within a 500-foot radius of the affected area were contacted through the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Deschutes Alerts system. They were advised to stay indoors and refrain from engaging in activities involving open flames or smoking materials outdoors. In addition to this, firefighters went door to door in the neighborhood located downwind from the gas leak to disseminate this vital information, and street access to the area was temporarily restricted.
Cascade Natural Gas dispatched their crews to the scene promptly, and they successfully repaired the damaged line without needing to interrupt gas services in the area. The situation was resolved before 5:30 p.m.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of using the 811 line locator service before engaging in any excavation activities. Lieutenant Sawyer emphasized the significance of signing up for the Deschutes Alerts service, especially in rural areas, as it plays a critical role in disseminating information about various incidents, such as gas leaks, brush fires, or railroad-related events occurring in the region.
