EPA to begin sewer infrastructure repairs in Hawai’i following wildfires
(UI) – Starting the week of February 26th, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be clearing and inspecting sanitary sewer lines on Honoapiʻilani Hwy and Keawe Street in Lahaina, between Leialiʻi Parkway and Keawe Street (from Wahikuli Wayside Park to Safeway on Honoapiʻilani Hwy and from Minit Stop to Honoapiʻilani Hwy on Keawe Street).
EPA will be clearing obstructed sewer lines of debris and inspecting these lines for damage starting Monday, February 26th and ending Saturday, March 2nd, between the hours of 8:00 PM to 4:00 AM. This work is expected to be completed by March 2nd but is weather-dependent and may be extended. The right, southbound lane on Honoapiʻilani Hwy will be closed, as will the right westbound lane on Keawe Street, including various short-term lane closures at intersections along these routes.
The work will allow the County of Maui to prioritize the emergency repairs needed to protect the wastewater treatment plant from excess infiltration of water through damaged sewer pipes.
EPA is supporting the County of Maui Departments of Water Supply and Environmental Management along with Hawaiʻi Department of Health to address water infrastructure damaged by the fires. According to an online statement, EPA said, “Our shared goal is to see the people of Lahaina return to their homes with reliable wastewater service and safe drinking water.”
