Jackson, Miss. sewer system on the mend under interim manager’s leadership
(UI) – According to WLBT.com, Jackson, Mississippi’s Interim Third-Party Manager Ted Henifin released his first quarterly report since taking over the city sewer system last fall.
The report indicated that “significant progress has been made” in bringing the city’s failing sewer system into compliance with federal law, including repairing 90 main breaks in the last quarter of 2023. Additionally, more than 125,000 ft. of sewer line was inspected and repaired.
In 2024, Jackson’s water utility will inspect up to 25 miles of sewer line, fix up to 40 sewer main collapses, and secure 4,000 ft. of sewer line with cured-in-place piping (CIPP). Work has also commenced on a “major sewer rehabilitation project” in Queens, where 3,000 feet of sewer line has already been inspected and cleared.
However, the report also noted that the city’s sewer system remains “fragile,” with over 130 sanitary sewer overflows reported between October and December 2023.
WLBT.com reported Henifin saying, ““JXN Water will continue to prioritize sewer repairs based on the impacts [they] cause to [their] customers, first addressing overflows or backups to structures and sensitive properties. Also, new locations with issues called in by residents and businesses throughout the city will continue to be evaluated.”
