Public meeting held on proposed DeLa Express gas pipeline project
Community groups gathered in Beaumont, Texas for an informational meeting on the proposed DeLa Express Pipeline, 12 News Now reported. A massive planned natural gas pipeline project, the DeLa Express could affect Jefferson County property owners.
The proposed pipeline would carry 2 billion cubic feet of gas per day (bcfg/d) from West Texas to an LNG facility in southwest Louisiana. Some residents have raised concerns on the proposed route, which would cut through Jefferson County.
The purpose of last week's meeting was to give affected property owners an understanding of their rights when addressing pipeline developers, and provide more information on the project. 12 News Now reported that the meeting was orchestrated by the Port Arthur Community Action Network.
According to documents filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), Moss Lake Partners, the Houston-based company that has proposed the pipeline, is currently working to contact affected landowners. The company has not yet responded to comments or questions from the media.
Energy companies have consistently maintained that pipelines represent a safe and efficient method for transporting natural gas. In Jefferson County, a significant underground network already facilitates the movement of crude oil, chemicals and other materials.
On a national level, the American Gas Association indicates that there are roughly 2.5 million miles of natural gas pipelines distributed across all 50 states.
