$10 million water main overhaul underway in Washington County, Penn.

(UI) — Pennsylvania American Water has begun a $10 million project to replace 4.8 miles of aging water mains in Washington and Allegheny counties. The upgrades aim to improve service reliability, reduce disruptions, and enhance water flow for firefighting.

“Providing reliable service to our customers means making continuous investments in our infrastructure,” said Tiffany Reed, senior manager of operations. “We prioritize projects based on a number of criteria, including the need for larger mains to handle system demands, age of existing pipe, and history of main breaks or service interruptions.”

The project includes new ductile iron pipes in several municipalities, with work already underway at multiple locations:

Washington City:

  • West Prospect Ave. (South Main to Acheson Ave.)
  • South Main St. (Park St. to Stokely St.)
  • Stokely St. (South Main St. to Acheson Ave.)
  • Acheson Ave. (Dewey Ave. to Redstone Lane)
  • North Lincoln Ave. (Beau St. to Highland Ave.)
  • Murtland Ave. (Locust St. to Ridge Ave.)
  • Kennedy Ave. (Murtland Ave. to dead end)
  • North Franklin Ave. (Hall St. to Church St.)

Other areas include:

  • Peters Township: Pinewood Drive, Squire Lane
  • Elizabeth Township: Blythedale Road
  • North Strabane Township: McClelland Road, Greenwood Drive, Blue Jay Drive, Locust Ave.
  • Glassport Borough: Indiana Ave., Monongahela Ave.
  • Monongahela City: Second St.

Crews will work weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with traffic restrictions in place. The project, including customer service line connections, final restorations, and paving, is expected to be completed by summer.

The company invested approximately $675 million in 2024 to improve water and wastewater systems across Pennsylvania, supporting more than 10,125 jobs. Studies show that every $1 million invested in water infrastructure generates about 15 jobs.
