MLGW completes $37.4 million pipeline upgrade in South Memphis, Tenn.
(UI) — Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division (MLGW) has finished construction on its $37.4 million Weaver-Gill pipeline project, marking one of the utility’s largest modernization efforts to date.
The 5.4-mile, high-pressure natural gas distribution line is now fully operational, just ahead of Public Natural Gas Week.
The new 30- and 24-inch pipeline replaces infrastructure that was nearly a century old and is built with thicker, high-strength steel for improved safety and reliability. Design work was completed in-house by MLGW, with Mid South Engineering Consultants overseeing construction inspection and Wisconsin-based Equix serving as general contractor.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime type of upgrade, considering the replaced pipelines were installed nearly 100 years ago,” said Doug McGowen, MLGW president and chief executive officer. “To complete this critical work without any interruption to service is a testament to the planning and execution of all involved.”
Work began on Gill Road in Barton Heights and concluded at the Weaver Gate Station on Weaver Road. The project, which did not disrupt gas service to homes or businesses, is now moving into the remediation phase, which involves restoring land and property impacted by construction. Restoration is expected to finish by December.
MLGW plans to hold a community celebration in November to mark the project’s completion.
