DC Water continues work on Soapstone Sewer Project despite hurdles
DC Water is currently dealing with challenging conditions while excavating a manhole to 42 feet as part of the Soapstone sewer rehabilitation project. They encountered hard rock at 30 feet and, as of August 22, were halfway to their goal, according to Forest Hills Connection. This excavation, located on Albemarle Street east of Connecticut Avenue, has faced unexpected hurdles, including an unknown large storm drain that disrupted planning.
Another significant setback is the discovery of a ten-inch sewer pipe not documented in any infrastructure maps, believed to be linked to Avalon the Albemarle on Connecticut Avenue, Forest Hills Connection reported. Peter Tinubu from DC Water noted this may be an illegal connection as they work to trace the pipe's entrance into the building for sewage management. Despite attempts to locate its origin, the search has been largely unfruitful.
Due to these challenges, particularly the undocumented sewer pipe, the project's completion, initially scheduled for September 11, is now expected to be delayed until mid-to-late October. The final task involves relining a 325-foot pipe flowing from Albemarle Street into the park, after which the manhole and street can be restored.
