MSA Safety launches new multigas detector for confined space, underground safety

MSA Safety, Inc. introduced its latest innovation, the ALTAIR io™ 6 Multigas Detector, during the 2025 National Safety Congress & Expo in Denver, Colorado. The six-gas detector is designed to enhance confined space monitoring and sampling applications, providing a critical safety tool for industries including underground infrastructure, construction, manufacturing, oil and gas, and utilities.

The ALTAIR io 6 is the company’s first cellular-connected gas detector with an integrated pump, making it suitable for pre-entry confined space sampling. Features include MSA’s XCell® sensors, a large high-visibility display, a rechargeable external battery, and a compact, handheld design.

The device will integrate into the MSA Connected Work Platform, joining the ALTAIR io™ 4 Gas Detection Wearable. While the io 4 serves as a continuous personal monitoring device, the io 6 is aimed at sampling environments on worksites before entry. Both share the same interface and are supported by MSA Grid software, allowing safety managers to track devices, receive real-time alerts, and access data across fleets of detectors.

“We’re focused on solving our customers’ safety challenges by enhancing protection, compliance, and efficiency,” said Stephanie Sciullo, President of MSA Americas. “Expanding portable detection capabilities in our Connected Work Platform is another step forward in helping keep workers safe.”
