Consumers Energy launches 8-mi. gas pipeline replacement project in Michigan
(UI) - Consumers Energy has begun construction on an approximately 8-mile natural gas pipeline replacement project spanning four cities in Oakland and Macomb counties, Mich., as part of ongoing efforts to modernize aging underground infrastructure.
The Four Cities Metro Pipeline project runs through Royal Oak, Clawson, Madison Heights and Warren, and is expected to improve system reliability for more than 750,000 residential and commercial customers. Initial construction in 2026 will focus on Royal Oak, Clawson and Warren, with work continuing in phases through 2029.
The project will replace pipeline segments dating back to the 1950s, addressing aging infrastructure and supporting long-term system performance and safety.
“Projects like this are vital to the sustainability of our infrastructure,” said Holly Bowers, vice president of natural gas engineering and supply at Consumers Energy. “By replacing aging pipelines, our customers can continue to count on us to deliver safe and reliable natural gas.”
Consumers Energy said it is coordinating with local municipalities and stakeholders to manage construction impacts, including traffic disruptions. The project is also expected to support more than 100 jobs annually during the construction period.
The utility noted the investment is part of its broader strategy to upgrade legacy pipeline systems and enhance service reliability across its Michigan network.
