Raleigh Water advances $43 million+ Mine Creek gravity sewer replacement
(UI) - Raleigh Water is moving forward with a major gravity sewer replacement project along the Mine Creek corridor aimed at improving system performance during wet weather events and reducing the risk of stormwater-related overflows.
The Mine Creek Outfall Gravity Sewer Replacement project will upgrade approximately 15,500 linear feet of gravity sewer by installing larger-diameter pipe and rehabilitate an additional 13,000 linear feet of existing sewer using structural lining methods. The work is designed to increase hydraulic capacity, improve structural integrity and extend the service life of the system.
Construction will begin near Crabtree Creek adjacent to I-440 and continue along Mine Creek to West Millbrook Road. The project also includes sewer improvements along both the east and west sides of Shelley Lake, extending north to North Hills Drive. Multiple road crossings are planned, including two crossings at North Hills Drive, as well as crossings at West Millbrook Road and Shelley Road.
The project is intended to better prepare the sewer system for increasingly intense rainfall events that can overwhelm older infrastructure. By increasing pipe capacity and rehabilitating deteriorated segments, Raleigh Water aims to reduce the likelihood of sewer surcharging and infrastructure damage during high-flow conditions.
The project is budgeted between $43.3 million and $55.3 million. Engineering and construction services are being provided by Brown and Caldwell. Construction timing and traffic impacts will vary by segment as work progresses along the corridor.
