$75.5-million HDD contract advances Navajo-Gallup water pipeline project
(UI) - The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has awarded a $75.5-million contract to Flatland Energy Services LLC for horizontal directional drilling (HDD) work on the Navajo-Gallup Water Supply Project, a major regional infrastructure initiative serving communities across northwestern New Mexico.
The contract covers nearly 10,000 ft of trenchless pipeline installation within the Block 2-3 Pipeline segment of the San Juan Lateral, Smart Water Magazine reported. HDD construction will be used at four critical crossings—including the San Juan River, Chaco River, Shumway Arroyo and Nenahnezad Hill—where conventional trenching would be impractical or could affect environmentally and culturally sensitive areas. The work includes installation of 36-in. to 42-in. diameter pipe, with construction expected to continue through 2028.
The pipeline segment will connect the Frank Chee Willetto Reservoir to the San Juan Lateral Water Treatment Plant, which is also under construction. Together with recently awarded contracts for pumping plants and a river intake facility, the HDD work represents part of more than $470 million in ongoing infrastructure investment along the San Juan Lateral corridor.
When complete, the Navajo-Gallup Water Supply Project will include approximately 300 miles of pipeline, 19 pumping plants and two water treatment plants serving an estimated 250,000 people. According to Smart Water Magazine, the project is intended to improve access to reliable drinking water across the Navajo Nation, the City of Gallup and portions of the Jicarilla Apache Nation.
