Atlas Energy to buy $840 million in Caterpillar power assets
Atlas Energy Solutions has signed a long-term agreement with Caterpillar Inc. to secure approximately 1.4 gigawatts of natural gas power generation equipment through 2029, supporting the company’s strategy to develop private grid systems for industrial and infrastructure customers.
Under the global framework agreement, Atlas will procure large natural gas reciprocating generator sets, including Caterpillar CG260-16 stationary units designed for behind-the-meter deployments and G3520 series generators suitable for both behind-the-meter and bridge power applications. Deliveries are scheduled between 2027 and 2029.
Atlas said the agreement provides supply certainty and reserved manufacturing capacity from Caterpillar as the company expands its private power generation platform. The company expects to invest roughly $840 million under the agreement and projects that its total owned and operated power generation capacity could reach about 2.0 gigawatts by 2030.
Company officials said growing demand for electricity driven by artificial intelligence infrastructure, manufacturing reshoring, and grid capacity constraints is accelerating interest in private grid solutions. The additional power generation assets are intended to help industrial customers secure reliable, on-site energy as utilities and infrastructure systems face increasing demand pressures.
