PG&E plans to move power lines underground along Highway 89 in California
(UI) — In the upcoming months, the Plumas County power lines on Highway 89 between Moccasin and Indian Falls will be relocated underground by the Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), the Oroville Mercury-Register reported.
The electricity company announced its participation in the PG&E Community Wildfire Safety Program on July 10.
To lessen the risk of wildfires in the region, about 2.2 miles of lines that run alongside the roadway will be buried. There will be one-way traffic management in construction zones throughout the project, which the statement said would be finished by the end of August.
According to the Oroville Mercury-Register, "PG&E is building and expanding its electric system underground to not only help reduce wildfires caused by equipment, it will also help to reduce the need for wildfire safety-related power outages," said in a release issued Monday by PG&E. "Undergrounding will also help protect trees, improve system reliability and beautify communities."
The business has already undergrounded lines on Highway 89 south of Canyon Dam totaling slightly under three miles, and it is now working on lines on Highway 70 east of the border between Butte and Plumas counties.
PG&E stated that it will expand its coverage of the west side of Plumas County later this year, including more work on both Highways 89 and 70. According to the press announcement, Plumas County will be served by the project's whole 60-mile length.
