Utah plans to invest $14 million in water infrastructure in Cedar City
(UI) — Officials in Cedar City intend to invest over $14 million in water infrastructure as part of their long-term water strategy.
However, the proposed budget for this year is still subject to modification. The budget has been discussed in public by members of City Council ever since it was initially presented on May 3. Water and pay for city employees are hot subjects.
The planned projects include a number of efforts, including the construction of a new water tank, the installation of a new waterline in Cedar Canyon, and the establishing of production and test wells. Initial funding for particular water-related projects was $13,211,000. However, according to Jason Norris, the city of Cedar City's finance director, in a conversation with Cedar City News, the latest estimate has increased to $14,283,000.
According to Norris, there is presently over $5 million set aside for certain projects, and an additional $4.6 million is being moved from the Capital Improvement Fund and set aside generally for water-related projects.
Another $4.6 million will stay in that account with the goal of using it for water, depending on several conditions, because money transferred to the water fund cannot be placed back into the Capital Improvement Fund.
The outcomes of the test wells that the city has sponsored at Martin's Flat and Green Hollow will be used to inform future financial decisions, according to Norris.
“We will most likely transfer that over for water projects,” Norris said according to St George News. “But we’re not in any hurry to do that until we have some more data on either where production wells can go or we may have to reevaluate and go a different direction with water development.”
The City Council will hear a revised copy of the budget on June 7, at 5:30 p.m., then vote on it the following week, according to Norris.
