Crown launches divisions for underground lead pipe inspection, remediation
(UI) — Crown Electrokinetics Corp. has announced the formation of two new divisions, Element 82 and PE Pipelines, aimed at tackling the issue of lead pipes in drinking water systems. Element 82 will focus on lead pipe inspection, while PE Pipelines will handle remediation efforts.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that around 9.2 million lead pipes carry drinking water across the United States, though some estimates go as high as 12.8 million. Due to poor mapping and the complexity of water systems, the exact number remains uncertain, but millions of American households are at risk of lead exposure.
Element 82 has partnered with Chuck Hansen’s company, Electro Scan Inc., to utilize the Swordfish hand-held tool, which detects various pipe materials using electrical resistance. This technology, recognized by the EPA, allows for the accurate identification of lead pipes without the need for costly and disruptive excavation.
Chuck Hansen, Chief Advisor Lead Pipe Assessment, stated, “The partnership with Element 82 will help expand Swordfish across the country, making lead pipe identification faster and more efficient.”
Element 82 has already begun projects in New York, Virginia, and Florida, with more announcements regarding purchase orders and revenue targets expected soon.
To support these new divisions, Crown has hired a team of experts, including David Kinsella as President of Element 82 and PE Pipelines. Other key appointments include Mike App and Matt Campos in project management and engineering roles, and Erich Spangenberg as Chief Advisor, Risk Mitigation.

Crown has granted equity awards to these new team members as part of their compensation, with vesting based on business milestones.
