GDC secures $16 billion for Hudson Tunnel project, set to create 95,000 jobs
(UI) — The Gateway Development Commission (GDC) has finalized the funding needed for the Hudson Tunnel Project (HTP), securing a total of $16 billion.
This includes a $6.88 billion Full Funding Grant Agreement with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and $4.06 billion in Railroad Rehabilitation and Improvement Financing (RRIF) loans from the Build America Bureau.
The HTP, a major underground infrastructure project, will replace and expand the aging rail tunnel beneath the Hudson River. With this commitment, GDC has achieved the largest federal funding allocation for a rail project in modern history. According to a recent report by the Regional Plan Association (RPA), the project is expected to generate approximately 95,000 jobs during its construction phase, far exceeding earlier estimates.

The construction of the new tunnel and the rehabilitation of the existing 114-year-old structure will enhance regional connectivity and support long-term economic growth. Early work components, such as the Hudson Yards Concrete Casing Section 3 and Hudson River Ground Stabilization, have already contributed thousands of jobs and billions of dollars to the local economy.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy celebrated the milestone, highlighting the critical importance of the project for regional and national transportation. Senator Charles Schumer and New York Governor Kathy Hochul also expressed their enthusiasm, noting that the project is now set to proceed after years of delays.
The Hudson Tunnel Project aims to enhance rail connectivity and support future economic growth, addressing one of the most crucial components of the region's underground infrastructure.
