Underground explosion triggers fire in Virginia's Crystal City neighborhood
(UI) — According to ARLnow, an underground utility fire occurred in Crystal City, a neighborhood in Arlington, Va., on July 23. The fire broke out on the 2400 block of Crystal Drive around 1 p.m., following reports of an explosion heard and felt in the area.
The Arlington County Fire Department (ACFD) quickly responded and informed the public via social media, advising them to avoid the area. Utility crews were also dispatched to the scene. A local witness reported hearing a loud boom and seeing smoke, which later turned black, according to ARLnow.
A power outage was reported in the vicinity, though the extent was not immediately clear.
By 2:30 p.m., with the assistance of Alexandria and airport firefighters and Dominion power crews, the fire was under control. By 3:15 p.m., the fire was fully extinguished, and crews began clearing the scene. No injuries were reported.
This incident follows several power-related issues in Arlington, including recent outages in Pentagon City, northern Crystal City, Ballston, and Virginia Square.
