Idaho legislature approves critical funding for water infrastructure
(UI) — Idaho's legislature has approved vital funding for water infrastructure and wildfire response, marking significant steps towards bolstering the state's resilience against environmental challenges. The bills have now been sent to Governor Brad Little's desk for final approval.
"Idaho must maintain our water sovereignty and not turn out like other western states in the Colorado River Basin, such as California, where the federal government stepped in to supersede the state’s control of its water,” Gov. Little said. “These investments build on decades of good work and demonstrate that IDAHO, not the feds, can best determine the fate of our water.”
Among the legislative initiatives garnering Governor Little's support are several key budget recommendations collectively known as "Idaho Works."
Senate Bill 1411 allocates $30 million towards enhancing water infrastructure, continuing the state's substantial investment in water quantity and quality over recent years. Additionally, Senate Bill 1373 earmarks $1 million to aid farmers in enhancing irrigation systems and water quality through the Water Quality Program for Agriculture (WQPA).
“Idaho’s natural resources, especially water, are the foundation of our economic prosperity, outdoor recreation, strong agricultural sector, public health, and overall way of life. I appreciate my legislative partners prioritizing these investments in Idaho’s future,” Gov. Little said.
