Governor Sanders announces $204 million for Arkansas water projects
Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has announced $204 million in financial assistance for water and wastewater projects across Arkansas. The funding will support 45 projects in 28 counties, benefiting over 198,000 residents.
“My administration has prioritized investments in Arkansas’ water system and today’s announcement adds another $204 million to that effort,” Sanders said. “I’m proud to work with our local communities and the Department of Agriculture to ensure every Arkansan has access to safe drinking water.”
Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture Wes Ward also weighed in, emphasizing the importance of reliable water and wastewater infrastructure for the state's communities and industries. “Reliable water and wastewater infrastructure is essential for the sustainability of communities and industries throughout our state as well as the quality of life for every Arkansan,” he said. “We are thankful for Governor Sanders’ continued leadership that will ensure the long-term success of our state.”
Of the $204 million, $145 million will be distributed through loans, while the remaining $59 million will be offered as grants and loans with principal forgiveness.
Since Governor Sanders took office, Arkansas has administered more than $2.5 billion for water projects statewide, utilizing both state and federal funding.
Some key projects receiving funding include:
- Blytheville, Mississippi County: $13.8 million loan to test and remediate emerging contaminants in the city's drinking water system, benefiting 13,406 residents.
- Cave City, Sharp County: $609,515 loan to replace sewer mains for 1,979 residents.
- Hampton, Calhoun County: $2.3 million loan for system inspection and repairs to serve 1,181 residents.
The funding also supports numerous rural water initiatives, including a $129,000 grant to the Arkansas Rural Water Association to provide technical assistance statewide.
Governor Sanders' initiative comes as part of a broader push to modernize water infrastructure across Arkansas and ensure safe, sustainable water systems for all residents.
