Texas A&M weighs underground transit plan with Elon Musk's Boring Co. to reduce campus traffic
(UI) — Texas A&M University is considering a partnership with Elon Musk’s Boring Co. to address growing traffic challenges on campus, according to Bloomberg.
The "Aggie Loop," a proposed underground tunnel network, was mentioned in a July 2024 report outlining potential solutions for the College Station campus. The student newspaper The Battalion recently revealed that university officials are looking into the plan, according to Bloomberg.
The project, estimated to cost between $250 million and $350 million, would take approximately three years to complete. It would feature several above-ground and below-ground stations located in high-traffic areas on campus. Beyond the construction, ongoing operational and maintenance costs would also be a factor.
The tunnel system, envisioned as an all-electric, zero-emission transport option, would provide quick, direct routes with minimal stops, linking the east side of campus to student apartments on the west. Peter Lange, the university’s chief operating officer, believes the project is feasible but requires extensive planning.
Although Boring Co. has proposed similar projects in other cities, many have struggled to gain traction. The company currently has only one public tunnel in operation, located in Las Vegas.
