West Virginia American Water starts $700,000 water main upgrade in Hinton
(UI) — West Virginia American Water has started a $700,000 infrastructure project to replace 2,200 feet of water main in Hinton, W.Va.
This upgrade aims to enhance water distribution for local residents and businesses and follows a similar project on Garden Street earlier this year, which replaced 680 feet of main at a cost of $175,000.
“This vital infrastructure improvement project will help with service reliability and sustainability for our city’s water system,” said Jackie Scott, Mayor of Hinton. “Following this infrastructure upgrade project, the city has plans for sidewalk and road improvements. We appreciate West Virginia American Water expediting this main replacement project to allow us time to make those additional improvements in the city.”
The work began on Sept. 30, replacing an aging 8-inch water main on Main Street, between Second and Stokes streets. Construction is expected to be completed by December, with street restoration set for spring 2025. Crews are working Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and traffic restrictions are in place during the project.
These upgrades are part of a broader plan by West Virginia American Water, which will invest over $97 million in infrastructure improvements statewide in 2024. The company has invested more than $736 million over the past decade, replacing 168 miles of water main to improve the state’s aging water systems.
During construction, customers may experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water, or reduced pressure. The company is working to minimize these disruptions and advises customers to report any water-related emergencies, such as leaks or service issues, through its website.
