Charleston County, S.C. deploys trenchless tech for pipe repair, sinkhole prevention

Charleston County Public Works has successfully applied trenchless technology as a no-dig solutions to fix aging stormwater pipes around the South Carolina county, and prevent sinkholes with minimal disruption, ABC4 News reported.
The trenchless methods have been applied in an effort to repair pipes without digging trenches in streets or yards, so that area crews can avoid any unnecessary traffic disruptions or underground utility damage while conducting the repairs.
According to the County, in the past six months crews have completed several projects in this style using different methods including a cured in place pipe (CIPP) and foam injection repairs.
While this method reportedly reduces the wear and tear on the surrounding roads, the county also states that they typically are safer, faster, and can be more cost-effective than traditional methods.
According to ABC4 News and Public Works officials, several areas have already been repaired using the trenchless method including the following locations:
Woodside Manor, Heaton Place, and Plymouth Avenue:
- 2,155 feet of pipe repaired using CIPP.
- Three structures repaired with Foam Injection.
- Multiple sinkholes filled.
Capri Isle Neighborhood:
- 540 feet of pipe lined with the CIPP method.
- Seven structures replaced.
- Nine tidal check valves installed to prevent tidal flooding.
