Governor Hochul announces record $3.4 billion for New York water infrastructure
On Thursday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a historical $3.4 billion investment aimed at enhancing water infrastructure throughout the state. This funding, which will be overseen by the Environmental Facilities Corporation (EFC), supports 328 local projects focused on improving water quality and public health, iHeart Radio reported. Compared to last year, this investment represents a 55% increase, thanks to collaborations between state and federal governments, particularly under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
According to iHeart Radio, Of the total investment, $2.6 billion is designated for sewer infrastructure, while $821 million goes towards drinking water initiatives. These efforts are projected to create around 30,000 jobs and ensure that all New Yorkers have access to affordable, safe, and reliable water. EFC President Maureen A. Coleman highlighted how federal funds are being strategically leveraged to maximize investment in clean water infrastructure.
Governor Hochul stressed the transformative impact of these projects on communities and public health, asserting that every New Yorker deserves access to clean water without financial strain. Senator Chuck Schumer approved of the initiative, recognizing it as an effective use of federal infrastructure funds to safeguard New York's water supply. The projects in focus include enhancements to drinking water systems, replacement of lead pipes, modernization of sewer systems, and green stormwater management solutions.
The EFC will utilize financing options such as low-interest loans and grants to make these projects financially feasible for local governments, ensuring sustainable benefits for communities throughout the state.
