VIKING, Alberta (UI) — An Alberta-based excavating contractor has been fined $100,000 after a worker was seriously injured in a trench collapse on a sewer line restoration site in 2022.
HCL Site Services Ltd., headquartered in Vegreville, pleaded guilty on Nov. 20 in Sherwood Park Court of Justice to one count under Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Act for failing to ensure the health and safety of a worker. Five additional counts were withdrawn by the Crown.
The charges stem from an incident in August 2022 when a trench partially collapsed during sewer repair work in Viking, Alberta, leaving one worker seriously injured.
The total penalty includes the victim fine surcharge, according to court documents.
