Columbia Gas completes West Virginia pipeline expansion to boost local gas supply

(UI) — Columbia Gas Transmission, a subsidiary of TC Energy, has officially placed its Eastern Panhandle Expansion Project into service, enhancing natural gas delivery capacity in the tri-state region. According to a letter filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on June 30, 2025, the pipeline began service on June 26.
The project is designed to support residential and commercial energy demand in Morgan County, West Virginia, delivering more than 47 million cubic feet per day of natural gas. It connects to the local distribution company, Mountaineer Gas, and is part of TC Energy’s broader Columbia Gas Transmission system, which supplies critical energy across the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, and Appalachia.
The Eastern Panhandle Expansion includes 3.4 miles (5.4 kilometers) of 8-inch diameter pipeline, beginning at interconnections with two existing Columbia Gas (TCO) pipelines in Fulton County, Pennsylvania. The line then runs through Washington County, Maryland, and terminates in Morgan County, West Virginia.
FERC originally approved the project in July 2018, following an application filed in 2017. Construction began in late 2024 after FERC granted a Notice to Proceed. Columbia requested final authorization to commence service on June 4, 2025, which was granted by the Office of Energy Projects on June 20.
The pipeline is expected to play a key role in supporting economic development and maintaining system reliability in the region. Columbia Gas emphasized in its FERC filing that all regulatory procedures were followed and that the contents of the notice were accurate to the best of the company’s knowledge.
