Sagres Construction to lead $47.5 million water main overhaul in Charlottesville, Va.
(UI) — The Rivanna Water & Sewer Authority (RWSA) has approved a $47.5 million contract to upgrade the central water line serving Charlottesville and parts of Albemarle County, enhancing the region’s underground drinking water infrastructure.
Sagres Construction Corporation, based in Arlington, Va., will lead Phase 1 of the Central Water Line Project. The new pipeline will interconnect the area’s Urban Drinking Water System, replacing aging infrastructure with larger transmission mains to move water more efficiently across the system.
Currently, the city and county share water resources through a network of smaller pipelines, which limit the volume of water that can be transported between treatment plants, storage reserves, and customer service areas. The new main will help balance supply across the network, ensure system redundancy, and improve maintenance capabilities.
Construction on Phase 1 will begin later this year, with completion targeted for 2029. The project route includes Stadium Road, Jefferson Park Avenue, Cherry Avenue, Avon Street, E Water Street, and 10th Street NE, among other streets. Phase 2 is scheduled to begin in 2026 and finish in 2028.
Once complete, the new water main will strengthen the city’s infrastructure, ensuring improved service for both Charlottesville and Albemarle County.
