EPA gives $49 million boost to rural, small and tribal wastewater projects

(UI) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded $49 million in funding to help rural, small and tribal communities address persistent wastewater infrastructure issues.

The funding, distributed through the Rural, Small and Tribal Clean Water Technical Assistance Grant Program, will support technical assistance providers working directly with hundreds of underserved communities. These projects aim to strengthen wastewater systems, improve Clean Water Act compliance and advance the EPA’s Powering the Great American Comeback initiative, which focuses on ensuring clean air, land and water access nationwide.

“Small and rural communities are the backbone of this great country, and EPA is committed to partnering with them to provide clean and safe water that supports healthy people, agricultural production, economic opportunity, and vibrant ecosystems,” said Jessica Kramer, EPA senior advisor.

The funding will assist local leaders in planning, designing and funding essential wastewater infrastructure upgrades. Technical assistance providers will help communities manage aging infrastructure, workforce shortages and other operational challenges.

The National Rural Water Association welcomed the funding. “NRWA is grateful that EPA has continued making these vital technical assistance awards,” said Matt Holmes, CEO. “Funding for hands-on assistance programs is essential for addressing significant water and wastewater challenges faced by small and rural communities.”

Olga Morales Pate, CEO of the Rural Community Assistance Partnership, also praised the effort. “As a national leader in technical assistance, RCAP is positioned to provide customized help to small utilities, particularly those who need it most,” she said.

Rural and tribal communities often face disproportionate hurdles when maintaining water and wastewater infrastructure. This program will offer support for navigating complex funding programs, managing systems efficiently and ensuring long-term reliability.
