Worker killed after 50-ft fall at Gateway Tunnel construction site in NYC
A carpenter working on New York City’s Hudson River Tunnel project died after falling 50 feet at the Hudson Yards Concrete Casing site on Manhattan’s west side, according to officials and several news outlets. The fatal incident occurred shortly before 9 a.m. Thursday near West 30th Street and 11th Avenue.
The worker, employed by the New York Concrete Corp., was part of the team constructing the third section of the Hudson Yards Concrete Casing — a critical underground connection between Penn Station and two new Hudson River rail tunnels. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, NBC New York reported.
The FDNY reported that the worker fell from a newly poured foundation wall. “We do not know how or why he fell,” FDNY Battalion Chief Anthony Romano said. The Gateway Development Commission, Amtrak and Related Companies issued a joint statement offering condolences to the worker’s family, while the New York City District Council of Carpenters described the loss as devastating to the construction community.
Work on the project has been suspended pending an investigation. The Hudson Yards Concrete Casing is a key element of the $16 billion Gateway Project, designed to double rail capacity between New Jersey and Manhattan by adding two new tunnels beneath the Hudson River.
