Avangrid unveils $18.5 billion plan to strengthen U.S. grid and gas infrastructure by 2028
Avangrid, Inc. has announced plans to invest $18.5 billion in U.S. electric and gas infrastructure by 2028, with a focus on reinforcing utility networks in New York and New England. The announcement came during Iberdrola’s Capital Markets Day on Sept. 24, 2025.
The bulk of the spending will go toward rebuilding aging infrastructure, expanding grid capacity to support advanced manufacturing and data centers, and hardening systems against severe storms. Avangrid said the investments will help avoid escalating storm restoration costs, improve service reliability, and enhance resiliency for its 3.4 million utility customers.
“This plan ensures the grid will support growing energy demand today, make it more resilient, and accelerate economic competitiveness into the future,” said Avangrid CEO Jose Antonio Miranda.
The company emphasized that the program builds on existing commitments, noting its prior investments have already supported more than 70,000 U.S. jobs and contributed $10 billion to the nation’s GDP. Upcoming projects will continue to expand access to reliable power while creating opportunities for local businesses and suppliers.
Avangrid, which employs about 8,000 people and operates more than 10.5 GW of generation capacity in 24 states, has earned recognition as one of America’s top corporate citizens by JUST Capital and as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by the Ethisphere Institute.
With the latest multibillion-dollar investment, Avangrid is positioning itself as a key player in modernizing U.S. utility infrastructure at a time of surging energy demand.
