Denver to host 26th Utility Investigation School in December
(UI) — The American Society of Civil Engineers’ Utility Engineering and Surveying Institute (UESI) and the Buried Asset Management Institute–International (BAMI-I) will hold their 26th Utility Investigation School (UIS) from Dec. 8–12, 2025, at Kiewit’s headquarters campus in Denver.
The program, now in its second decade, is considered a benchmark training event for subsurface utility engineering (SUE) professionals. More than 25 sessions have been held nationwide, training hundreds of engineers, surveyors, and project managers in utility investigation standards and practices.
This will be the sixth time Denver has hosted the school, and the third held in partnership with Kiewit. The company’s campus provides both classroom facilities and demonstration sites for hands-on training.
Participants can choose between a two-day intensive course (Dec. 8–9) focused on managing utility risks in infrastructure projects or a five-day immersive course (Dec. 8–12) covering utility standards, geophysics, and field investigation tools. Attendees can earn 16 or 40 professional development hours (PDHs), respectively.
Training topics include ASCE 38-22 on utility investigation and documentation, ASCE 75-22 on utility as-builts and record drawings, and EJCDC contract documents. Equipment demonstrations will cover ground penetrating radar, electromagnetic methods, pipe and cable locators, and magnetometers.
Wei Liao, who coordinates the program, said the school has become the “gold standard for utility investigation education” and emphasized its role in advancing both technical skills and industry networking.
