Jacobs, Rambøll to lead design of Denmark’s Marselis Tunnel
AARHUS, Denmark (UI) — Jacobs has been selected to provide design and construction management services for the Marselis Tunnel, a centerpiece of Denmark’s Infrastructure Plan 2035, according to the Danish Road Directorate.
The project, developed in partnership with Rambøll, is in the planning and design phase with construction expected to begin in 2028. Located in Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city and busiest commercial port, the tunnel will connect Aarhus Port to the E45 Østjyske Motorway via Åhavevej, diverting heavy traffic away from Marselis Boulevard.
Officials say the project will reduce congestion, improve freight access, and create opportunities to redesign central urban areas. “It is a complex task to build a tunnel on one of the busiest access roads to Aarhus. We will need international experience, because there are no similar projects like this that have been delivered before in Denmark,” said Michael Schmidt Vosgerau, senior project manager for the Danish Road Directorate.
Jacobs will lead the mechanical and electrical design and provide construction management support, while Rambøll will act as developer consultant. “The Marselis Tunnel is a transformative investment in Denmark's transport infrastructure, with the potential to unlock economic growth and enhance the quality of urban life,” said Richard Sanderson, senior vice president at Jacobs.
The Marselis Tunnel will span one of the country’s most critical freight corridors, easing pressure on local roads and improving safety while opening space for new green and public areas in Aarhus.
