Newsom’s Delta Conveyance Project wins crucial endorsement

California Governor Gavin Newsom's initiative to expedite the Delta Conveyance Project received a significant boost this week with an endorsement from the Imperial Irrigation District (IID), the largest irrigation district in the U.S. According to CBS News, the IID, which manages over 3,000 miles of canals in Southern California, supports the plan to reroute water through an underground tunnel system intended to deliver clean water to 27 million Californians and 750,000 acres of farmland.
Newsom emphasized the need to overcome bureaucratic hurdles in modernizing California's water infrastructure, urging the Legislature to act swiftly on this essential project, CBS News reported. The IID's Board of Directors stated that supporting the project is vital for addressing statewide water scarcity, even though the district does not rely directly on the State Water Project.
However, there is mounting opposition from some Democratic lawmakers, particularly Assemblymember Rhodesia Ransom, who has expressed concerns about the potential threats to Delta ecosystems and the agricultural economy. Ransom has called for a full audit of the project, arguing that fast-tracking it violates existing water management laws.
In a related development, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California allocated $141.6 million to the project in December 2024.
