OSHA investigates fatal trench collapse at Conroe construction site
(UI) - OSHA is investigating a fatal trench collapse at a construction site in Conroe, Texas, where a worker was killed during underground utility installation work.
The incident occurred Saturday near South Loop 336 East and FM 3083 East, where a crew was installing underground piping when the walls of a trench—reported to be approximately 10 feet deep—collapsed. Two workers were trapped in the collapse, Fox26 News reported.
One worker, identified as Jose Arevalo, 44, died at the scene from his injuries. A second worker was rescued and transported to a hospital for treatment and has since been released, according to local officials.
Emergency response teams from multiple agencies assisted in rescue and recovery efforts. OSHA has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse, said Fox26, and whether trenching and excavation safety standards were followed.
The incident underscores ongoing safety risks associated with trenching operations, one of the most hazardous activities in underground construction, particularly when proper protective systems are not in place.
