Multiple water main breaks expose challenges of L.A.'s aging water system
(UI) — A series of water main breaks across Los Angeles is drawing renewed attention to the condition of the city's aging underground water infrastructure after five pipeline failures were reported within a single week in July, including a major rupture involving a century-old transmission main in West Hollywood.
According to Fox 11 Los Angeles, the most significant break occurred when a 36-inch water transmission line installed more than 100 years ago failed, releasing an estimated 17 million gallons of water that flooded businesses, residential buildings and underground parking garages. Crews from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) have continued repairs and pressure testing before returning the line to service.
Additional water main breaks were reported in Boyle Heights, Hollywood and Venice, prompting residents to question whether aging pipelines are becoming increasingly vulnerable to failure, Fox 11 reported. LADWP maintains nearly 7,000 miles of water mains and replaces approximately 240,000 feet—or about 45 miles—of pipe annually.
While utility crews continue restoring service in West Hollywood, the recent failures have renewed calls for increased investment in replacing aging water infrastructure to improve system reliability and reduce the risk of future main breaks.
