Metro Vancouver advances sewer separation, watermain replacement program

(UI) — The City of New Westminster, British Columbia, is advancing its largest sewer and water infrastructure project as part of a long-term program to modernize aging underground utilities, improve stormwater management and eliminate combined sewer overflows. 

According to ConstructConnect, the West End Sewer Separation, Watermain Rehabilitation and Green Infrastructure Project includes installation of new storm sewers, replacement of aging watermains and separation of outdated combined sewer systems in the city's west end. The work also incorporates 24 rain gardens and flow monitoring stations to enhance stormwater management and improve climate resilience.

According to the city, much of the underground infrastructure dates back decades, with some sewer lines installed as early as 1911. Separating combined sewers into dedicated sanitary and stormwater systems is expected to reduce overflows during heavy rainfall, improve water quality and increase overall system capacity.

Construction began in 2024 and is expected to be substantially complete by the end of 2026, ahead of schedule, ConstructConnect reported. The city said the phased program has been coordinated to minimize disruptions while replacing watermains, installing new stormwater infrastructure and preparing for additional utility rehabilitation projects planned in the coming years.
