Elon Musk’s ‘Tesla tunnel’ concept eyed for Universal Orlando expansion corridor
(UI) - Elon Musk’s tunneling venture, The Boring Company, has been selected by the Shingle Creek Transit and Utility Community Development District to advance plans for a proposed underground transit system serving the Universal Orlando Resort area.
According to Fox 35 Orlando, the project would involve development of a high-speed underground tunnel network designed to bypass heavy traffic along International Drive and connect Universal’s existing theme parks and CityWalk with the new Epic Universe expansion currently under development. If completed, the system would function similarly to the company’s Vegas Loop in Las Vegas, using electric vehicles operating in dedicated underground tunnels to move passengers between destinations.
The selection follows a competitive procurement process that included proposals from multiple transportation technology firms, some of which offered elevated guideway systems. District officials ultimately chose the underground tunnel concept, citing its potential to reduce surface congestion and improve travel times across the resort corridor.
Project stakeholders will now move into the next planning phase, including route coordination with Universal Orlando and nearby businesses, as well as detailed engineering, operational and financial feasibility assessments. A final construction timeline has not yet been established.
The proposed system is intended to support growing visitor volumes tied to the Epic Universe development while addressing longstanding roadway congestion in the International Drive corridor, Fox 35 Orlando reported. If approved and constructed, the tunnel network would represent one of the first privately developed underground transit systems of its kind in Central Florida and a significant expansion of The Boring Company’s urban tunneling portfolio.
