OSHA forms safety partnership for Manchester, N.H. stormwater tunnel project
(UI) - The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Methuen Obayashi Joint Venture to strengthen worker safety practices during construction of the Cemetery Brook Drain Tunnel Project in Manchester, N.H.
The project includes construction of a gravity-fed stormwater conveyance tunnel intended to modernize Manchester’s drainage system and reduce sewer overflows. According to OH&S, OSHA said the partnership will focus on mitigating key construction risks associated with tunneling and underground work, including exposure to hazardous gases, pressurized zones, confined spaces, struck-by hazards, and excavation-related safety concerns such as shoring and protective systems.
Under the agreement, OSHA and the project team will collaborate on improving safety and health management systems and expanding hazard-recognition training for subcontractors working on the site, OH&S reported. The effort also emphasizes leadership engagement, accountability, worker participation, and proactive hazard identification throughout construction.
The partnership is part of OSHA’s Strategic Partnership Program, which promotes voluntary collaboration between regulators, contractors, and industry stakeholders to improve workplace safety and health outcomes on complex construction projects.
