American Water achieves utility resilience goal five years ahead of schedule

(UI) - American Water has achieved a companywide resilience target five years ahead of schedule, citing infrastructure investments, emergency preparedness efforts and workforce training programs aimed at strengthening water and wastewater system reliability.

The utility announced it met its goal of increasing its weighted average score under the American Water Works Association's (AWWA) Utility Resilience Index (URI) by 10% as of year-end 2025. The benchmark was originally targeted for 2030.

The Utility Resilience Index is designed to evaluate a utility's ability to prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies and extreme weather events. The assessment considers factors including operational and financial capabilities, emergency response planning, business continuity measures and community vulnerability.

American Water said infrastructure upgrades and targeted resilience investments helped drive the improvement. The company noted that resilience planning remains a key component of its broader risk management strategy, particularly as utilities face increasing weather-related disruptions and aging infrastructure challenges.

Looking ahead, American Water plans to invest approximately $48 billion over the next decade in capital improvements across its water and wastewater systems. Planned investments include infrastructure renewal, water quality projects, technology upgrades, resilience initiatives and system acquisitions.

The company said the investments are intended to strengthen long-term system reliability while improving its ability to maintain service during emergencies and other disruptive events.
