EU project advances autonomous safety systems for underground construction

(UI) - A European research initiative has successfully demonstrated autonomous construction equipment, drones and wearable safety technologies designed to reduce worker exposure to hazards in tunneling and highway construction environments.

The four-year BEEYONDERS project recently showcased its technology platform in Spain, where researchers tested autonomous machinery and digital monitoring systems in simulated tunnel and active roadway construction settings. According to Health & Safety International, the effort focused on removing workers from high-risk environments while improving operational efficiency.

One of the project's key demonstrations involved an autonomous wheel loader operating in a post-blast tunnel environment. Drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras first mapped the tunnel and created a digital twin of the construction site before guiding the loader through smoke-filled, low-visibility conditions to the excavation face. Researchers said the system can help reduce downtime and improve safety during some of the most hazardous phases of tunnel construction.

The project also tested autonomous equipment on highway construction sites in Italy, HSI reported, where wearable tracking sensors allowed machinery to monitor worker locations in real time and automatically stop when personnel entered designated safety zones. Project participants reported the technology helped optimize equipment routing and reduced fuel consumption.

Additional technologies included smart safety suits, worker-monitoring systems and wearable exoskeletons designed to reduce physical strain on construction crews. Project leaders said broader adoption of the technologies will require continued investment in workforce training and industry acceptance.
