Pipeline break threatens water supply across Central Texas communities
(UI) - A pipeline failure near the Leon River Bridge has disrupted water supplies for multiple Central Texas communities, prompting emergency conservation measures while crews work to restore service.
Officials with Central Texas Water Supply Corporation said the damaged pipeline serves a number of municipal and water utility customers across the region. According to local NBC6 News, communities affected by the outage include Rogers, Rosebud, Lott, Buckholts and several water supply corporations in Bell and Falls counties.
Emergency repair efforts are underway. As a temporary measure, crews are installing a bypass line across the bridge to help restore water deliveries while contractors prepare a permanent replacement. Officials said the long-term repair plan calls for boring a new pipeline beneath the river crossing.
Water providers throughout the service area have urged customers to limit usage to essential needs only while repairs continue, NBC6 reported. Communities have asked residents to avoid outdoor irrigation, vehicle washing, pool filling and other non-essential activities in order to preserve system capacity.
The incident highlights the importance of redundancy and resiliency in regional water transmission systems, particularly where critical pipelines cross waterways and serve multiple communities. Officials have not released a timeline for completion of the permanent repair but said work is continuing to stabilize the system and restore reliable service.
