PHMSA opens $22 million in pipeline, hazmat safety grants
WASHINGTON (UI) — Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration has announced more than $22 million in grant funding opportunities tied to pipeline and hazardous materials transportation safety programs.
The funding will support 11 grant programs focused on first responder training, community safety awareness, pipeline safety technology development and support for state, tribal and local safety initiatives.
PHMSA said the funding is intended to strengthen emergency preparedness and improve public awareness surrounding pipeline and hazardous materials transportation infrastructure.
PHMSA Administrator Paul Roberti said the grants are designed to help communities and emergency personnel better respond to transportation-related incidents.
“This investment will support first responders as well as help raise awareness at the local level,” Roberti said.
According to the agency, some funding opportunities will support research into new pipeline safety technologies and programs aimed at reducing transportation-related risks involving hazardous materials.
PHMSA said applications for the funding programs will be accepted through June 19. The agency also announced that one of the grant programs will operate through a new pilot grant application platform launching later this month.
The agency oversees federal safety regulations governing pipeline transportation systems and hazardous materials shipments throughout the U.S.
