Utility strike near LAX damages gas line, water main during construction
(UI) - A construction-related utility strike damaged a natural gas line and water main near Los Angeles International Airport, causing major traffic disruptions along one of the airport’s primary access corridors.
According to officials, a third-party contractor struck a six-inch gas line during utility work along Sepulveda Boulevard near LAX late Wednesday evening. The incident prompted lane closures as SoCal Gas crews worked to contain the leak and complete temporary repairs.
The damaged utility lines and resulting construction activity disrupted traffic heading into and out of the airport ahead of the Memorial Day travel rush. Officials warned motorists to expect significant delays until repairs are completed.
Gas service interruptions were not expected, according to utility officials. Authorities also reminded contractors and property owners to contact 811 before excavation work to help prevent underground utility strikes.
