Cable, HDD Shore End Suppliers Chosen For Lake Ontario Project

Crosslake Fibre has selected Hexatronic Cables & Interconnect Systems AB of Sweden to supply the high-fiber-count submarine cable and Maritech International LTD to construct the Horizontal Directional Drilled (HDD) shore ends for its 58-km project being developed across Lake Ontario.
“To meet customer demand on the high-density route between Toronto and New York, Crosslake Fibre requires a high-fiber-count, high-performance cable,” said Mike Cunningham, CEO of Crosslake Fibre. “Hexatronic’s double armored, 96 pair, ribbon cable provides us with an optimal solution for a high-performance cable.”
Cunningham also added that constructing HDD shore ends for the landing of the cable in both Canada and New York offers multiple benefits.
“The low-impact nature of construction and the added protection that it provides led us to design HDD shore ends for the landing of the cable in both Toronto and in Wilson, New York,” said Cunningham.
Byron Skaftouros, Maritech’s Project and Development Director, agrees.
“Horizontal Directional Drilling is the way to go when installing a cable in an urban area,” Skaftouros said. “The construction is short in duration, limited to a small area via non-intrusive techniques with ducts that can be re-used, making it an ideal solution.”
Crosslake Fibre’s Lake Ontario project includes the construction of an unrepeatered submarine fiber-optic cable system that will be the first across Lake Ontario to directly connect Toronto, Canada and Buffalo, N.Y. with dark fiber. It is expected to be in service in Q3 2018.
