2,355-foot pipeline under Washington’s Snake River to be replaced using HDD
(UI) — Work is set to begin on a project to replace a petroleum pipeline running beneath the Snake River between Walla Walla County and Pasco, Washington, according to Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business.
A $2.2 million permit issued by the city of Pasco authorizes the use of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) to replace the existing 6-inch diameter line. The bore will extend about 2,355 feet and reach a depth of roughly 54 feet below the riverbed.
The project will include excavation of about 234 cubic yards of soil at the exit pit near Marathon Petroleum’s fuel distribution terminal, where the new pipeline will be tied in. Excavated material or clean fill from a local quarry will be used to backfill the site once installation is complete, Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business reported.
Tesoro Logistics Operations LLC owns the pipeline, and Michels Trenchless Inc. will perform the construction work.
