Ameren Illinois to invest $140 million in natural gas pipeline replacement program
(UI) — Ameren Illinois plans to invest nearly $140 million in 2025 to upgrade its natural gas transmission system across four Illinois counties. The upgrades aim to enhance system resilience and meet federal pipeline regulations.
The company is replacing more than 20 miles of pipeline as part of a multi-year effort to align its infrastructure with U.S. Department of Transportation guidelines.
Pipeline replacement projects:
- Madison County: A six-mile pipeline replacement from World Wide Technology Raceway to Granite City is underway, with completion expected by early July. Three new regulator stations and two control valve stations will be installed.
- Collinsville (Madison County): A 2.9-mile replacement along Illinois Route 157 is set to begin March 3 and finish by early September.
- Randolph County: A six-mile stretch of pipeline from Ameren Illinois' Tilden Natural Gas Storage Field to Sparta will be upgraded starting mid-February, with completion targeted for early July.
- Bond County: Nearly seven miles of 12-inch steel gas transmission pipeline from Greenville to Pocahontas will be replaced starting in April, with work finishing by mid-September.
- St. Clair County: A 1.2-mile section between New Athens and Marissa will be upgraded to a 16-inch steel pipeline, with work beginning in mid-April and wrapping up by early September.
Ameren Illinois is coordinating with the Illinois Department of Transportation and local officials to manage traffic disruptions.
"These projects will ensure the continued safe delivery of affordable natural gas to meet the energy needs of our customers and to meet their expectations for reliable gas service during periods of extreme cold weather," said Brad Kloeppel, Senior Director of Natural Gas Operations at Ameren Illinois.
The company urges motorists to be mindful of work zones and slow down near construction areas.
"We need everyone's help when it comes to work zone safety in these communities and on every route where workers are present," said Richard Spurgeon, Ameren Illinois' Manager of Safety.
Before work begins, Ameren Illinois will notify the Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators (J.U.L.I.E.) to mark underground utilities. Customers may see paint and flag markers near work sites.
