SCE to bury 63 miles of new power lines in fire-damaged Altadena, Calif.
(UI) — According to Pasadena Now, Southern California Edison (SCE) will replace 63 miles of overhead circuits with underground cable throughout Altadena, beginning with a 23-mile stretch slated for construction in July 2025.
The first phase targets neighborhoods devastated by the Eaton Fire, where service lines were completely destroyed, so homes can reconnect as rebuilding moves forward.
SCE operations chief David Fanous told the Altadena Coalition of Neighborhood Associations that the project will convert the area’s aging 4 kV network to a 16 kV system to handle future electric-vehicle chargers, heat pumps, and other all-electric upgrades. Homeowners must sign right-of-entry forms; the utility is offering $500 per property and will negotiate permanent easements later.
As Pasadena Now also reported, roughly 40 miles of the work lies in high fire-risk zones, and SCE is working with Los Angeles County to seek FEMA funding that could trim connection costs for residents. A dedicated “one-stop shop” staffed by SCE planners and energy advisers is available to guide property owners through the rebuild process.
