Cal/OSHA investigates fatal trench collapse at Calif. construction site
(UI) — Two workers were killed after a trench collapsed at a construction site in Stockton, Calif., prompting an investigation by the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA).
Stockton Fire Department crews responded early Aug. 8 after a coworker discovered the workers' vehicle and cellphones at the site and reported them missing, KCRA3 News reported. Emergency responders found evidence of a trench collapse and deployed heavy rescue teams and excavation equipment to remove soil and debris before recovering the victims.
Fire officials said the men had last been seen the previous evening after returning to the trench, reportedly to take additional measurements. Authorities have not released the victims' identities, and officials said it was not immediately known whether they were part of a licensed construction crew.
Cal/OSHA is investigating the circumstances surrounding the collapse, KCRA3 reported.
